ive read they've actually learned just to untie the rope at the fix point and let the "food" drop then go retreive...imho there is no limit to the knowledge they can retain....I think they are super smart animals.

I suspect those images can be put in the Urban Legend realm...I've seen those images several times, sometimes they claim its PA, sometimes in NJ.... sometimes Canada. See below for the Candian version, eh:

And c'mon, think about it- that rope would really hold that bear?

Doh! Ok, you might be right!

I don't think it really matters...
The bear has the food either way.

A possible progression:
* The bears learned to cut the rope with their claws.
* Human uses wire.
* Bear breaks wire.
* Human uses stronger wire.
* ...

The human was still not smart enough to stop putting the food out.

BTW, I've seen these pics several times now.

They're probably real pics. The story has probably been changed to localize it (ie, if I were doing it, I'd send it out to some friends in Southern Maine and tell them it was near Mt Agamenticus or something to make it even more interesting).

I want to know what kind of rope that is. Strong stuff!!!
