When you have a beautiful sunny day, white fluffy clouds sailing across the sky, a slight breeze, temps near 80, and half a day to do whatever you want, THE PLACE to be is on Mt. Jefferson. Apparently that’s a really good idea because AT LEAST 50 other people had the same thought. I traversed the Caps Ridge trail and was amazed by the number of people I encountered on a Tuesday afternoon. The trail is in great shape, a little muddy in some spots, but not too bad in the lower boggy areas. The yellow blazes and cairns were easy to see. I love this trail! Talk about getting a big bang for your buck. First, you get a wonderful aerobic workout in a short 2.5 miles up to the summit, and then your thighs, knees, ankles, and toes get another workout on the descent that can take just as long. Second, climbing over the caps is just fun! Third, the views of the presidentials from the top of Jefferson are stunning! All the summits were clear today as puffy clouds sailed well above them. I always feel in awe as I look at the other peaks and into the great gulf. It was cooler and a little breezier on Jefferson’s summit. Almost everyone I saw had put on a jacket. I didn’t feel a need to. I guess being at the age where hot flashes happen has its advantages. Now if only I could count on them to occur while hiking in the winter I’d be all set! Anyway, it was really fun revisiting Jefferson this afternoon, a short but impressive hike in so many ways.
