...up the second morning in a row at 330 and off north on 95 to
Roberts-1710'-located just north of Shin Pond (near N entrance to Baxter)As i got off Rt 95 and passed through Patten, i thought about the family vacations at South Branch Campground in BSP with our 3 now adult girls. Patten seems caught in a time warp, the name on the small supermarket is no longer "Big M" and "new" local fast food place is across the street from the now boarded up one we used to visit, but little else seems changed. The view of Katahdin as i crested the hill going into Patten was superb as usual, 530 sunrise kissing the top of the snowy cirque with a not-yet-set moon hanging in the morning sky.
I drove thru Patten to just past Shin Pond Camps where i swung north on Fire Road "L". The 5 mile journey back in on Snowshoe and Lane Brook Rd was "interesting"-potholes, muddy ruts, too deep large puddles, small washouts plus a few log "spears" and pointed rocks that surfaced over the winter. I was able to park south of the Roberts summit, less than a mile from the top.
The hike was easy and fun-sunny day, fairly open hardwoods again and a gradual rise. About 200 feet from the top, i hit some small cliffs, but quickly managed to thread my way to the summit. I was pleased to find a large, open, rocky area with excellent views to the NE-where i hope to be in NMW west of Masardis and Ashland later this month. I hung out on the rocks soaking in the sun and descended then without incident.
The dappled sunlight on the dirt roads made the return to Shin Pond pretty slow, but when i passed thru Patten again, Katahdin was literally shining with the morning sun reflecting brilliant white from the massif.
The drive home gave me time to think how to repair the siding piece that sheared off about 25' up my chimney as i was raked with high winds on the Hurricane climb yesterday morning
