Looking for a medium sized non-High Peak in the High Peaks to snowshoe this weekend. Both of these come to mind and am curious if anyone has comments on either, if you've recently climbed them on snowshoes. (Having hiked next-door Noonmark, it appears that Round is similar in trail length and elevation.) Thanks.

smaller peaks

My personal smaller peak favorites:

1. Noonmark
2. Ampersand
3. Hurricane
4. Cascade (although this is a 4000 footer I believe)

Hurricane

I did Hurricane in Jan., nice mountain with great views of the high peaks. We did it from rte 9n.Check out my page for pics and report.
I've also done Ampersand in winter, also a great hike with awesome views of the Saranac Lake chain and the Western high peaks.

Both are excellent choices in my view

In the KV area are also, Snow Mountain, Owl's Head (these two could both be done in one day) Roostercomb, Little Porter with it's super views of the Great Range. Bald peak from New Russia.

I would go with Round probably, since it puts you right in the middle of it all. But, have you done Noonmark in winter? You can't do that mountain too many times!

Oh wait! Go do Mount Adams from the Allen trailhead in Upper Works. As of Monday the trail was broken going up, and with the forecasts for this weekend you will get the BEST view in the high peaks!

Adams is on state land? The firetower is noted as unsafe, if even still there. Are there views without climbing the tower? Where can one get a trail description of Adams?

Thanks

which owls head, the mountain on private property in Keene or the lookout on Giant's shoulder?

Adams tower is still there and easily climbable. There are no views from the summit itself. But the views are probobly the best in the Dax.

The best discription would be gotten from this site. I don't believe it's in a ny tril guide book, unless it's an older version of the ADk ones.

Her's mine. Start from the trail head to Allen and follow that until you come to an old building on your left. From here start looking for the unmarked trail on your left, it's not to far away. The start had a ribbon marking it out. The trail follows remnents of old logging roads for the first part, before rejoining the original trail. The trail I didn't find to be to steep, but is a steeady climb once it starts. Now if I'm correct, or if my memory serves me right, the first section of stairs is missing. But we could easily shimmy up the side to the second landing. From her the tower is a little rough, but I don't remember it being dangerous, by any means. The summit is roughly 3.5-4 miles from the parking area.

Hope this helps a little.

Peak_bgr gives a good description. I'll add to it. The stairs are all there (as of last October) but feel a little spongy. I'm 200+ and felt safe enough to venture to the top.

I think the trip is shorter, probably 2.5 miles. When you come to the buildings there is a logging road heading left. Don't take it. Keep on the trail as it bears right around a small hill, maybe a hundred feet or so. The route to Adams is on the left, but bears away at first as a mild left, before turning more sharply left and heading up. There are markers and some flagging and when I did Allen last week the book showed lots of traffic.

The Owl's head look-out is nice, but I was thinking of the small peak on the way to Cascade.
