I like Stoney Brook myself, I think the approach from the south is more scenic but both are quite nice. If you can drop a car at one end they make a nice end-to-end.

I like Carter-Moriah 'cause I have family on the road where the parking lot is.

I like the loop idea if you can spot a car. I did it without a spot once, but that walk along the road gets old at the end of the day.
 
For a long but spectacular day you can go up Shelburne and down Moriah Brook from Wild River Campground - or vice versa.
 
Up Stony Brook, down Carter Moriah gives you the best views IMHO. You get to look down into the Wild River valley, up toward the Moriah summit on the way up. I guess just like the Stony Brook approach.

I guess what you are hearing is that both ways are excellent (the Rattle River approach is pretty sweet too!)
