I've always taken it for granted that camping at South Meadow is free-for-all. But while hiking out the other day, we passed a big yellow "No Camping" sign on a tree. It didn't make clear what area it referred to. The popular campsites right behind it had been occupied in the morning and were now clear (this is right by the trail that goes across to the truck road by the parking lot).

What are the rules, exactly? Have they changed something?

Camping at South Meadows

In general, camping in the Adirondacks is at designated spots or "at large".

If you camp at large, it must be a certain distance from roads, trails, and water sources, like 150- 200 feet. It must also be below a certain elevation, 4k. Stricter rules apply to the High Peaks region.

Also, sometimes an over used camping spot is allowed to recover.

There is legal camping there. The spots are marked with discs.

exactly, the one that you saw may have been right on the road but if you follow a trail at most of those sites you will see a camping disc... they are still there....

the DEC is just trying to keep people from camping right on the road..
