Date of Hike: Sun 10/10/10

Trail Conditions: Surprisingly good given recent rains - muddy only in a few spots descending on Old Wolfeboro Rd (see below). Nice views from S. Moose summit on a gorgeous fall day.

Special Equipment Required: none

Comments: Optional - We followed a hike suggested by the 1999 edition of New England Hiking by Michael Lanza, ascending the AT (Moose Mountain Trail) for 2.4 mi up to the shelter, then descending via what the book called the Clark Pond Loop. After about .7 mi on the descent the trail ended at a gravel logging road that forked Left (West), with some kind of road construction clearaing. At this point we lost the trail and just kept walking out the road, ending up on Three Mile Road about 1.5 mi down the road from the parking lot, instead of back on the AT. The new AMC White Mountain Guide calls the trail we took the Old Wolfeboro Road (Province Road). While we had plenty of daylight and no havoc ensued, just want to mention this - not sure there is a trail and we missed it, or the old 1999 book was out of date.

Great trail though, good 4.2 mi or so/1000' elevation gain and easy footing which was perfect for my still recovering ankle. Would love to go back and do North Moose Mountain from Goose Pond Road next time WMG lists this as 3.4 mi/1350' gain.
