Destinations: S.Twin, West Bond, Bond, Bondcliff, Bond, S.Twin
Trails: Gale River, Garfield Ridge, Twinway, Bondcliff, W.Bond Spur (21 miles, 6600' elev gain)
Trail Conditions: Lots of water and mud from the ongoing snow melt. A plus: during the day, the drippy, snow-loaded spruce boughs finished their melting. Snow 4-6" deep above 3500', but lots of melting took place just in the course of this one single day -- the difference in the South Twin area between early morning and late afternoon was amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if it was mostly gone by Thursday or Friday. A couple of deep areas of soft snow (2-3'): by the Twinway/Bondcliff junction, and on the summit of S.Guyot.
Upper Gale River Crossing: Difficulty about "4" on a 10-point scale. Solid footing on rocks -- but 2-3" below the surface.
Special Equipment: WATERPROOF BOOTS and pants or gaiters (unless you're good for distance on wet feet).
Comments: Sunny, breezy, moderately hazy -- a classic 'Beach Day'. The lighting made the views of and from the Bonds particularly mellow. Temps around 50-60, making for great shirtsleeve (sometimes on, sometimes off) hiking. Great minds think alike -- I met several friends on the trail along with a number of others who were really enjoying themselves. Also had the pleasure of meeting Lisa (AMC educator) at the hut - she was standing in for the croo, due to arrive in a couple of days.
