date: 1/12/14
trails: baldface circle trail, slippery brook trail, bushwhack
conditions: parking lot off of 113 was a skating rink. thick smooth ice covering the whole thing. 113 itself was decidedly messy, rough and icy much of the way past fryeburg as well. the section leading into fryeburg was closed on the way back as well due to "high water". the trails had pretty good snow cover with wet granular snow. slippery brook was broken out and we packed it down pretty well today. from the col north of eastman we followed the trail a bit to the south then started our bushwhack across the upper drainage of slippery brook through beautiful open woods seeing snow depths of up to a foot. we climbed to the north ridge of sable hitting it a bit north of the summit then picked up the heavily moose travelled corridor of the abandoned sable mountain trail all the way to the summit. the first significant water crossing on slippery brook trail was interesting with water running over the ice bridges in the morning. it had come down at least a foot by afternoon with the snow bridge we used just upstream of the trail still intact. other smaller drainages were all crossable without much difficulty.
equipment: snowshoes.
comments: beautiful day. much more like april than january. nicest bushwhack of the winter so far. the moose highway along the old sable mountain trail is pretty amazing. spooked two moose up near the summit. a couple nice sheds were hiked out as well. thanks to jeremy, amy and eric for a nice day.
