Conditions:
Ice down low, still plenty of snow up high (with a dust on crust).
Microspikes (or similar) were the right tool up until 3000'+ where additional traction was needed on the steep parts of the orebed trail. MSR snowshoes were used from the steep section to the summit.
This time of year (especially with these conditions) all 3 pieces of kit can be useful (spikes, crampons, and snowshoes).
Stayed at the pine place apartment in Lake Placid on Friday night, nice place to stay when you want something nicer than the usual motels in the area.
