Goal: Saddleback Peak, The Horn. Reality: Saddleback ridgeline.
Trails: Green Weaver up to AT
Conditions: New snow over hard ice. Cold and very windy.
Equipment: Snowshoes, poles, winter gear including goggles and face mask.
Comments: We checked in at the ticket desk and they confirmed that we could again use Green Weaver to warming hut, then up to the top lift on a trail whose name I can't remember. One patroller for the area a (a volunteer?) stopped us near the hut and explained that we were snowshoing on a ski trail. (Yes, we knew, had asked for permission, and by the way, were we staying off enough to the side? His response was we were fine, he was glad we were aware of their rules and wished more were.) Once we arrived above treeline, just at the ridge we realized we didn't want to go any further. Tiny snow needles were pelting any skin they could find, the wind was knocking us over and covering up our tracks, we couldn't see where we were going, so we called it a good exercise in testing our winter gear, letting go of a goal and we turned around. The trip down was fast. Throughout our climb we were cheered on and given high fives by a bunch of snowboarders each time they saw us. Someone asked if we had stayed the night at "some cabin" on the mountaintop. Our response, nope, but fairly well prepared to.
