Saddleback, Basin, and Haystack. 4/22-4/24

Myself and another were going to go in towards Saddleback etc via the Johns Brook trail Friday eve. I wondered if anyone has been in there recently with any trail reports they might share. We currently plan on trying to grab a leanto, but will have the tents as well. Would appreciate any input. Thanks. Slamdog

Haystack

I hiked up Haystack from Marcy last weekend, so I can comment on the trail from the junction. Plenty of snow remaining up there. I used crampons on most of the trails above 3000 feet all weekend. There were some icy sections on Little Haystack & Haystack, but the steep part of the descent into the col was clear. The summit of Haystack was also clear of ice and snow. Snowshoe crampons might do the job, but I found that my 10-pointers were more suitable. Have a good climb. -ALGonquin Bob
