Hi,

I searched through here for Sandwich Dome trip reports and it seems that the majority of trips leave from the Waterville Valley side (Drakes Brook, Sandwich Mountain trails). Has any one done Sandwich Dome from Center Sandwich (Bennett Street, Gleason trails)? How are the trails on the Sandwich side in comparison from Waterville Valley (views, difficulty)? Would the Sandwich side trails be doable for a fit hiking dog? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Chris,

I have done the Dome from both sides. As I recall, the Bennett St. and Gleason Trails are a bit steeper than the WV side, but no problem at all for a fit dog. Good views as well.

Algonquin Trail

I've hiked the Algonquin Trail from Sandwidth Notch Road to Sandwich Dome with my black and yellow labs. It was a great hike with great views and several moderate scrambles. My dogs couldn't get up the first scramble but it was easy to bypass it on the right up a gully for a maybe 50 foot bushwhack. They got up the rest of it with out much difficulty. We used the gully on the way down too.

Did the loop from the Sandwich side a few years ago with Dave Metsky, cannot find a report on his site. We did it basically to explore trails we had not previously hiked, and in truth I can think of no other reason to do it that way (unless, of course, you live close to the trailhead).

I have hiked all 7 trails on Sandwich plus a secret trail to Black Pd, most of them twice, and I don't remember anything a dog couldn't get up or around. The WV side is easier to find and the trails are better traveled, you can decide if that is a plus or a minus.

Sandwich Notch Road pushes the definition of passable sometimes, so use caution if taking that route in a low-clearance car.

It is definitely not low-clearance car friendly right now, especially on the Waterville side.
