Snowshoes used all day.

Beautiful, clear, and cold. Upper Works road plowed and well-maintained. Upper Works (Flowed Land) parking lot mostly plowed, but deep snow in upper lot. Allen parking lot plowed and many cars were there. Parking lot at Santanoni TH not accessible, but good parking on shoulder of the road there. One snow machine track on the access road, providing a good path. Approx. 12" of fresh snow filled the still-visible groove of the trail. Broke trail partway to Bradley Pond when 2 more hikers caught us. Total snow depth varied from about 2-4 feet. We all took turns breaking trail until we reached the meadow where the herd path to Panther Brook begins. At that point, we turned back. Too slow going, too much energy spent on what should have been the "fast and easy" part of the hike. Gave herd path info to the other 2 hikers, but after partially breaking through the ice in the wet meadow there, they joined us on the return hike. Trail not broken anywhere on the herd path to either Panther Brook, or any of the 3 peaks (but 2 other hikers were going toward Bradley Pond area as we hiked out - destination and rate of success unknown). No sign of any groove on “new old” trail. Got colder as the day progressed. Failed on what I hoped would be W45. Good luck, and let us know if you break trail to "Saint Anthony's" peak!
