Following the tracks from 4 other hikers who were more than an hour ahead of me, I hiked in the road, then to Bradley Pond, up the herd path past the cliffs, up Panther Brook, and arrived at Times Square at 1pm. Seeing no track to the south, I decided to go over the big rock and see how it looked. The snow had a nice supportive crust, so I figured that was my time to solo over to Santanoni. There was no hint of the tracks from last weekend, and it was slow going, weaving among the trees and forcing my way up the slope to the first false summit. Once I obtained the ridge, it was easier going. When I topped out on the last false summit (there seemed to be 5 of those), I was greeted by the very welcome sight of a broken trail coming up the “new old” path (Tahawus Club trail). I was on the summit at 5pm, and descended the mountain on the nicely broken herd path.
Snowshoes used all the way from car to car. With the wind over the past weekend, don’t count on seeing my tracks between Times Square and Santa, but it‘s not a bad bushwhack. You might still see traces of the good path (Tahawus Club trail) that I descended from one hump north the summit.
