Apparently there was a SAR on Kaaterskill High Peak 9/18, into the next morning. Rangers were alerted to the problem by a 911 cell phone call relayed to them from a 911 dispatcher. The caller had a gps-capable phone, but the coordinates relayed to SAR were in Kingston!
They came down off the top heading North, disobeyed instructions to stay put, and turned LEFT instead of right on the snowmobile trail, trying to reach their car on Cty. Rt. 16. No maps or compasses were in use. Their light/phone (both?) died and they stumbled around the snowmobile trail in darkness.
Eventually the Rangers caught up with them, (apparently after making it about 3/4 away around the loop trail!), and walked them out. They were tired but ok.
Maybe people like this should be fitted with radio collars after this happens to them!
