This weekend will be my hiking partners and my 30th annual Oct. backpacking trip. We have kept this tradition since I was 18, you do the math. This yr a foot injury is keeping me from any peaks, even day hikes are out of the picture. Instead of canceling we have decided to stay at Sawyer Pond and eat and drink well! I feel I can make this short hike ok but I am not sure about hanging around one area for a couple days [Plan was Sat till Tues] I think this will be cut down [Sat to Mon] My question? what is the area like, crowded? shelter? parking? any off the beaten path campsites? The AMC guide dosnt say a lot. Thanks

It has both a shelter and tent platforms

I was there on July 7th just passing thru after whackin' down to Sawyer Pond from the col between Tremont and Owl's Cliff. The mosquitoes were so bad that I had to put on my Gortex jacket and pants with my hood bound tightly around my face to expose as little skin as possible... when I finally crunched my way and broke thru the woods at the far side of the pond, I encountered a "startled" couple who took a raft to the far side of the pond for solitude.

They must have thought it was a moose or something, but it was just a "whacko" crashing out into their scene. I said, "How's it going", then turned around and punched back into the woods... :D and whacked my way around the pond to the trail.

That area was quite busy that weekend, but it was July. If you head there this weekend, you will likely see very few people... Also, the Sawyer Pond Trail is very easy, and the pond is BEAUTIFUL!...

Enjoy your 30th annual trip!

Was there last Sunday

I took my puppy (6 months old and 52 lbs.) out early Sunday morning for a leisurely hike. We went to the shelter, and it seemed like it was a full house. I also saw 3 tents so the platforms were not full. Of course it was Columbus weekend, also and the camera crews were strolling in on our exit.

Love Sawyer Pond, I remember it as party central in the 70's. Only you can answer where to go for surrounding hikes. Carrigan is right there.

Thanks for the info I was wondering about the party thing ,being such a short walk. I gave up getting wasted in the woods at least 2 yrs ago but if its there ill just have to ride it out

I hiked over to the pond from Bear Notch Road on Monday. It was very quiet and beautiful. I only saw two cans, took those out. Looked quite clean. You never know what you'll get for a weekend, but your odds are beter now that summer is over.

Venus, Mars and Regulus will grace the sky over the pond, as viewed from the shelter/camping area, in the morning before sunrise :)

happy trails :)

Here is my photo album of my walk over to Sawyer Pond. This will give you an idea of what you will see. Here is my report:

On this hike to Sawyer Pond we saw several other hikers, including some having dogs accompanying them. This was a pleasant evening hike with a total elevation gain of 390 feet. It looks like a nice place to camp. We had a snack at the shelter at the pond, which was closed up by a tarp by the camper staying there.
