trails: loon service road, ski trails, bootleg black mountain ski trail, bushwack
conditions: service road and ski trails in great shape. i'm really impressed with how well loon maintains its trails. a small cairn marks the entrance onto the bootleg ski trail (shortly below the summit of loon north on the upper walking boss trail) which was generally easy to follow and a bit slick with wet leaves. where the trail makes a hard turn north towards black mountain we started bushwacking just east of south through mostly moderate woods, with some thick spots, to the ridge west of scar peak. here we turned east sticking to the southern side of the ridge to avoid the thick spruce and blowdown on the crest eventually turning up onto the crest and intersecting a short herd path that led to the summit canister and sign. we were able to basically reverse this on the way down though we did toy with staying higher on the ridge descending from the summit which led to pushing through thicker growth. a short herd path from near the summit lift on loon north leads to the highpoint on a large rock and nice view ledge just beyond.
equipment: navigational tools of your choice.
comments: great hike to scar ridge. found a bit more thick growth than on previous trips, but never too bad. some beautiful views from the slopes of loon. congratulations to mark on picking up scar and getting one peak closer to completing the nehh.
