trails: ski area access road, black mountain bootleg ski trail, bushwhack, east pond trail
conditions: we decided to head up the access road, which was milder than a direct ascent up walking boss ski trail, to the top of the gondola and then on to loon north peak. followed the bootleg trail to black mountain which was in good shape and easy to follow. started the bushwack in the usual spot where the bootleg trail turns hard left towards black mountain. did the bushwack to scar west in two parts first heading to the ridge west of the summit then heading due west towards the summit first on the south side of the ridge then crossing over to the north where we picked up a herd path to the summit. we encountered decent woods most of the way. between the west west bump and the west bump we mostly followed a herd path on the north side of the ridge that led pretty much all the way to the summit. heading to middle we followed the crest of the ridge which was thick and steep down to the col then real nice up to middle peak. from there we dropped down to the north side of the ridge skirting the bump between middle and east then ascended east peak arriving on the summit plateau south of the summit which was in the northeast corner and required pushing through a lot of thick spruce/fir and blowdown. from there we descended northeast and then east hitting the east pond trail at about 2700. east pond trail was in great shape with the one significant water crossing running pretty low.
equipment: navigational tools of choice.
comments: nice day for a traverse of scar ridge. cool early on with the fog and cloud blowing off well enough to help with navigation. lots of interesting woods and challenging bushwhacking along the way. thanks to jeremy, jeb and bill for a great hike.
