Hi, I have hiked a lot in New England and some in the High Peaks; I am following up on a recommendation from a contact who is not familiar w the Adaks. What do people know about hiking in the Schroon lake area (I don't have the ADK book for that region [yet])? I am esp. interested in one nighters (um, that sounds bad).- votna

To the east of Schroon is the Pharoah Wilderness. There is plenty to hike and camp for as many or few nights as you like. The two main peaks are Pharoah Mountain and Treadway Mountain. Both offer compelling views. There are a couple smaller hills but nothing of note. Lots of Lakes and small creeks as well as wetlands. There is also some good fishing. There are plenty of lean-to's around Pharoah Lake as well.

I second the recommendation for the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness. You can hike as little or as much as you want and still find places of beauty and interest. I'm planning a trip the first weekend in August (5-8), it will be the third (I think...) time I've done a trip there, and I'm sure I'll go back many times after this. I'm just looking forward to swimming in Big Rock Pond and relaxing on the pink granite slabs on the shores.

Good luck!

Josh

P.S. The ADK Eastern Adirondacks trail book and map are the main resources I rely on, but Barbara McMartin's 50 Hikes in the Adirondacks had an excellent section about the Pharaoh Lake Loop.

I third Pharoah Wilderness. It is very enjoyable to visit, with many beaver ponds, interesting swimming holes, and some great views. Pharoah is a formidable hike, especially in August heat. I have done this many times. Be sure to bring some bug dope, and maybe a fishing pole.
