for years i've seen people mentioning seven dwarfs, especially as a starting point for winter hikes to the twins and also to hale. i have never understood exactly where that is and what the protocol is to park/hike from there. from what i gather some sort of "trail" goes to haystack road and the old firewardens trail goes to mt. hale. i know many of you are familiar with this area and i'm looking for any pertinent info. to hiking from there in the winter to the previously mentioned peaks.
thanks.

Search for "dwarfs park" (seven gets omitted) -- there are several threads including pre-arranging to park there for a fee - one says $5.

Of course there may be new information to say about this--I don't have any though.

The 7 Dwarfs is about 1 mile off of Rt 3 in Twin Mountain. They are closed in winter but the owner lets you park there for a nominal fee (I think $5 though not sure....McRat paid for everyone when we parked ther.) People have mentioned just leaving 5 bucks under your wiper blade, or leaving it in an envelope by the door to the register office. From there you continue walking down the road to pick up the snowmobile trail that takes you to a point half way (or more) up Haystack rd.

The Seven Dwarf's Motel is on Little River Rd. in Twin Mountain. The owner charges about $3.00-5.00 a vehicle for parking. There is very little room on the road to park. Down at the end of Little River Rd. is a snowmobile trail heading down hill to the right and it crosses the Little River on a bridge. The bridge can be seen from the road. You can follow the snowmobile trail to Haystack Rd. or cross the bridge, turn left and follow a trail to the bridge near the North Twin Trail parking area.

Little River Rd. is the shortest route to the North Twin Trail, and the Hale Fire Wardens Trail, when Haystack Rd. is closed.

In winter most people ignore the first two crossings of the Little River on the North Twin Trail and continue up the left side of the river to the third crossing, thus they go right by the old Hale Fire Wardens Trail.

While the motel is closed in the winter, his snowmobile business is open. He rents them as well as running the little mini-restaurant-snack bar, with "Hot food available at the office between 8 am - 6 pm everyday! Stop by and warm up, clean restrooms and plenty of parking available."

Franz is a good guy and has helped myself and other hikers in the past. Please respect the property.

thanks for the info. is the trail to hale hard to find or does it get enough use to be pretty evident?

You don't need to walk up the road from 7 Dwarf's to cross the river.

Walk around to the backside of the 7 Dwarf's complex, cross the snowmobile
bridge, and turn sharp Left. That will bring over to the far side of the bridge that's up the road, and you won't have to deal with the chain link gate.

The Hale F.W. trail isn't snowmobiled (Roy's post might have been a little confusing). The snowmobile trail goes from the 7 Dwarf's, usually up to the North Twin trailhead. The former Hale F.W. trail is adjacent to the 3rd river crossing on the North Twin trail. If there are ski tracks you will have no problem locating it. It's up a short, eroded banking.

Depends on how you count them, most people would call it the first :)
* Cross river at/near 7 dwarfs
* Cross river on road just before parking lot
* Hike up trail to 1st crossing on trail section

The original crossing of FW Trail left the RR grade after this crossing, then immediately crossed back. Most people now stay on the herd path instead of doing this crossing. Cross a large side brook, then look for path ambling up steep bank. Once on top, pick up old woods road. In years past you could follow the phone wire sometimes but I haven't noticed it lately.

If the N Twin Trail isn't broken, you can also bushwhack up the ridge from the parking lot and intercept the trail, not quite as steep.
