This started out as a really nice day. Calkins Brook trail has a few deep muddy spots, but is such a nice trail; brook itself is low. Mud on Donaldson not as bad as I have seen it. But then as I get to Emmons (passed by PinPin) the black flies begin to swarm. No standing allowed. I barely pause the rest of the day. Seward herdpath is mostly dry ncluding the cliff, but I am chased from the summit by the flies. Down it's hot and though the flies abate, the mosquitoes come out. 8 hours--bugs are an incentive to go fast. My neck is swollen this morning. Allen awaits
