The plan was to meet Adkdremn at the Corey’s trailhead between 10-11am on Saturday. We made it there around10:30 or so introduced ourselves and pressed on to Ward Brook Lean-to. The walk in was nice with the occasional mud and deerflies. Nothing that could not be tolerated.
We got to the Lean-to in just under 3 hours and I was surprised when it was empty!!!!! We set up our camp made some lunch and headed out to do Seymour. Just as we started on the herdpath the clouds opened up and it rained for about 10 minutes just enough to make everything wet. The path is very easy to follow and gets really steep towards the top. Once you get on the summit ridge it’s a pretty flat walk to the summit. Is it me or does it seem like the ridge walk takes forever to the summit?
Once on top we did not have great views but as we started heading down the clouds opened up a bit. At this point the black flies came out and ate me up pretty bad. They literally could have carried me off the mountain. We arrived back at camp about 4 hours later. Not to bad of a mountain.
Sunday Morning we awoke early and we on the trail by 6:30am. We decided to take the “traditional” path up Seward. It’s a pleasant walk for a while then it starts getting steep and is very easy to loose the path on occasion. What is this “headwall” everyone is talking about? We did not find anything out of the ordinary. I was thinking there would have been a rock cliff 20-30 feet high or something. All I know is this mountain kicked my butt. We arrived on the summit and I was tuckered for sure. Seth and I looked at each other and said do you think we can do Donaldson and Emmons. The 3 of us agreed to move on so down the other side of Seward and onto Donaldson.
We arrived on Donaldson about an hour later and I found this to be easier than going up Seward. We arrived on a viewing ledge and took pictures and lounged for a while. We then took the 2 minute walk over to the summit and took some more pictures. Great day to be taking pictures.
On our way to Emmons we ran into CTRACY and we talked for a bit and pressed on. Great meeting you by the way!!!!! There is a lot of mud and swampy areas between Donaldson and Emmons but manageable. Once on top of Emmons we took some pictures of Longlake and the summit disk and headed back to Donaldson.
Once at the summit of Donaldson we chose to go down Caulkins Brook. This is a very pleasant walk and not very steep. I highly recommend this trail then going up the other side of Seward. The only problem going down this trail it was going to add another 5 miles or so to our hike. It was definitely a death march to our lean-to and we never made it back until 10:30pm 16 hours of hiking oh baby what a day woooooooooooo hooooooooooooooooo I am so glad we did all 4 this weekend as I am getting the itch to finish. Emmons made 38!!!!!
We all went to bed without even making dinner. We were that tired. Adkdremn was up before Seth and I the next morning and he packed out early we said our good byes and he went on his way. Seth and I packed up about an hours later and hiked back out as well. IT took us about 3 hours to hike out almost the same amount of time it did to go in. This was a brutal hike! I had blisters on my right foot and my legs were sore.
I have a ton of black fly bites along with mosquito bites. Scratches all over so it looks like I was in a really bad fight. Even though the mountains gave me a hard battle I still won the fight!!!!!! I would love to go back via Caulkins Brook and spend a nice day on the look out ledge on Donaldson and take it all in. Donaldson was my favorite out of the 4.
Andy is was great meeting and hiking with you and hope we can do it again soon. Its always nice meeting great people from the forums!!!!!!!
