Wow, there is snow, the SEWARDS are back! At this point no bare booting to Emmons or Seymour, this year it’s snowshoes only from the get go. Those conditions are kinder to our old bones and the landscape is magnificent. Still, though the gate is supposed to stay open till March 1, 2013, it is a challenge better be taken with an AWD/4WD with high clearance. Yesterday, Friday January 4, there was a few (4/5) inches of fresh snow on the road and additional 3 at the end of the day. The summer parking lot is not really cleared and one could already have his vehicle spend the rest of the winter there. As in past years we can expect the Ampersand caretaker to clear the road as long as it’s easier for him to do so instead of getting his snowmobile going to reach the lake properties.
On our way to Seymour, we noticed a well travelled path to Seward from Ward Brook, before us another group headed towards Calkins Brook and after us another pulled a sled in the same direction (all driving big trucks). New snowfall and wind made Inge work hard the last .5-mile before the summit, not a surprise as nobody had signed in since January 1st. And that is without counting the high winds on the ridge, it must have been quite a workout for the group on the Donaldson-Emmons ridge!
