trails: ward brook truck trail, seymour herd path, sewards herd path, calkins brook herd path, calkins brook truck trail

conditions: ward brook truck trail generally quite nice with minimal mud. seymour herd path easy to find and follow with pleasant footing down low with patchy mud then a bit wetter up high where the ledgy scrambling begins. herd path to seward well marked with cairn. significant mud down low and in spots on the steep ascent, along with wet ledge, then pretty dry along the ridge with some wet and mud in the sags between donaldson and emmons. calkins brook herd path was a nice surprise with minimal mud and decent footing most of the way. the junction was well marked with flagging and a cairn a couple pitches below the summit of donaldson on the seward side. calkins truck trail just a walk in the woods back to the ward brook trail. minimal blowdown along the route. all water crossings were low.

equipment: with the heat a water filter was essential for me to stay hydrated. plenty of places to fill up along the way.

comments: got a later start than planned after driving up early from nh, but in a way it worked in my favor as the weather ended up being really nice later in the afternoon. a pretty challenging day all around, but real fulfilling with beautiful views along the seward ridge later in the day. still out of the woods well before dark. awesome day.
