Trail: Skookumchuck up to junction with Garfield Trail
Condition: Excellent. Easy-to-avoid mud in a few spots.
Special equipment: None, just your usual walking gear. Donned fleece and gloves at the top due to wind and cold.
Comment: An up-and-back with an out-of-town guest. Our intent was to reach the Lafayette summit, but a strong, chilling wind at the junction on the ridge with the Garfield Trail discouraged a just-so-we-can-say-we-did-it push to the top. (We've been to the top of Lafayette before, several times.) Beautiful autumn weather until hitting the wind in the final quarter-mile or so; beautiful trees -- the last of the good color -- down below, too.
Though this was the Saturday of the Columbus Day weekend, we saw just six people total. The Skookumchuck is one of my favorite trails in the Whites, and its unpopularity is both mystifying and pleasing.
