Neil, or Randomscooter (over on ADKHighPeaks) may have passed through there. I think I remember RS talking about visitng Moss Pond years back.

I have not gone that route, but a bushwhack in that area is guaranteed to be difficult. Even though the path is 3X longer then the direct line, I think the trip on the path will be faster than the bushwhack
 
Bushwhack is great in the winter but rather tedious/scratchy in the summer.
 
I went from Sky to McDonnel and then to Redfield....

...on top of about 5 feet of crusty snow, which in turn was on top of a thick layer of criss-crossed deadfall.

Up on the ridgeline between the two in summer it very probably would be thick. Your pleasure/suffer ratio, if you try it depends on how desensitized to pushing through thick you are and to how lucky you get. Sometimes, as little as 10 feet to the north on a really bad roughly east-west ridge is a whole different world.
