I was staying at Mizpah Hut with Seema and crew and during the hike along the ridge on Sunday in the rain and wind I thought about the rest of the folks up on the snowfields with their grills and coolers. I couldn't imagine that they were having a good time. Monday dawned clear and cool and I started down by 5:50 with Mats, Maria, and Kathleen (MEB and Little Sister were headed over Pierce first), hitting the parking lot before 7:30. I checked my messages and found a few folks weren't coming up (understandable, considering the previous day's weather) but at least one other carload was coming. Off to the Auto Road I went.
I reached the base around 8:30 and decided to hang a bit but no one else showed up. I started driving up around 9:00 and parked in the 6000' lot for no apparent reason. Some folks were headed for Airplane but I hoofed it over to the snowfields. As I was setting up for the first run a young guy showed up who was quicker getting is boards on than I was and he got first turns, I got second run. The snow was significantly less than last year, two major sections with a rocky traverse between them for a total of about 450' of vertical.
Powderhound and ChickwithPicks showed up, and then MV_Skier and son, who, unclear on the concept of Slackfest stayed at Hermit and hiked up. Later we found TuaGuy and TeleDancer (also unclear on the concept, they hiked up from Pinkham) and my friends Emilie and Tyson (who was nursing a damaged knee and wasn't on skis). We each took 4-6 runs, the snow was nicely corned, the rocks weren't too sharp, and we grabbed Powderhound's shovel and filled in some of the worst part of the traverse.
End of my first run
MV_Skier and son
PowderHound's first run
Climbing
Self-portait
TeleDancer in the Rocks
ChickWithPicks
TuaGuy
Da Boys
Beer Good
For the folks at Mizpah - As I arrived at the snowfields I met a father and his son, who had just found two cans of Heineken in the snow and gave them to me. Is that karma or what? It tasted great.
Got to love a weekend that involved good friends, amazing food, hiking above treeline in the cold nasty rain, grey jays landing on your hands, and spring skiing up high. Video on the way.
