Trail Conditions: Downes well packed to the last ski trail junction. From there, it was broken and barebootable but jagged due to crust conditions all the way to the Passaconaway Slide path. Beyond that, unbroken, but generally supportive crust down low to not so supportive up high and a couple inches of new snow, sinking up to 4-6" in shoes in places. Should be decent going now, but slabbing the steep slope above the brook further on was (and probably is) a pain. Poles helpful here.
Kate Sleeper (also heading toward Whiteface), the E. Sleeper spur and the Mt. Tripyramid Trail to Middle Tri are well packed and barebootable, but you may posthole once in a great while. Getting across and up the south slide was do-able in microspikes, but crampons may be more appropriate. The junction sign is gone. Saw tracks heading down the south slide. Would say crampons and ice axe are essential for that route.
Well packed trail from M. Tri to the parking area. Only spotty small sections of ice on the steeps on Pine Bend.
I blame one of your members, NewHampshire, for this day.
