Any idea if this is:

(1) illegal?
(2) discouraged in any way?

i'd love to spend an off-season night up at the tower at some point if it's acceptable. If it's illegal/discouraged in any way, I of course would not attempt this.

I don't know the answers to your questions however the Old Fire tower on Smart's Mountain in Orford is often used by AT thruhikers spending the night so you might try that one.

People sign the summit log book and the (new) trailhead log book as such, so I assume it's okay. It does tend to smell like wet dog in there, however, so do so at your own risk :)

I met on ranger on the Kearsarge North Trail. He said that they considered the fire tower to be a shelter. You should probably call the Saco office. Their number can be found at :http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/white_mountain/contact/

There isn't much in the way of water nearby.

Let us know how you make out. I think it would be cool to spend a stormy night in there.

You can certainly sleep in the N Kearsarge tower and many do. A friend used to spend new years eve up there. If you go back through the summit log that is there now, you will see a few.

It is used by many folks year round and is complete with an outhouse. Be aware its quite popular so you may be sharing it
