trails: phoenecia-east branch trail, slide-cornell-wittenberg trail

conditions: nice parking off of route 47 about 9.4 miles from rt. 28 in big indian. 47 had clear damage from last years flood with signs of repair work all along its length to the trailhead. currently there is some construction work going on that may hold traffic up a bit. the trail immediately crosses the neversink which was completely dry. the trails remains dry on its moderate, but often rough climb, almost all the way to the summit with a couple of wet spots down low and a couple trickles along the trail in the first .75 miles. i spoke to a couple on the summit who were doing the loop from woodland valley that said all of the springs on the trail over wittenberg and cornell were dry and they hadn't been able to get any water along the way. pretty rampant bootleg camping around the summit and a fair amount of trash on the trail, summit area and in the parking lot. was able to pick up some. a couple of nuisance blowdowns in the lower portion of the route.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: got a relatively early start for what was a pretty quick climb up to slide. some nice views to nearby panther, cornell/wittenberg and up to the devils path area from an outlook below the summit. the rock block with the burroughs plaque had lots of tree growth around it so views were pretty limited, but could be found. a real pleasant hike to start off the day. i look forward to coming back and doing the loop someday.
