Hi there--any Waterville Valley area locals who could comment on snow cover on Smarts Brook Trail?

I think you may be getting snow before the end of this week, so the trail may change, but any local insight would be welcome.

Thank you!

Alspal and I ran up to the summit of Sandwich Dome on 12/3. The whole trail was covered in snow, 1-2" down low and close to a foot at the summit. We didn't use snowshoes and didn't have any trouble. The lower trails didn't look ready for skiing yet. It looks like things will change this week though.

Below Jenning's Peak on both Sandwich and Drake's the trails were still very uneven. Snowshoes would have ended up spanning rocks and logs and other stuff that isn't good for them. Above JP, I think the terrain and cover would have been fine for 'shoeing, although I watched three parties leave ahead of us, all sans 'shoes.

Based solely on the view from 49 this AM, wouldn't bet the cover up in the Smart's Brook network would be very consistent -- at 1500 feet in WV, there is a pretty consistent 3" of consolidated snow, and probably more in the woods.

However, that amount seems to drop fast as you go down in elevation. Smarts Brook is about 1200 feet; it was snowing lightly when I left this AM -- but it wasn't accumulating quickly.

I will keep my eye on the situation and repost tomorrow/Thursday, if the threatened warm spell and mixed precip event happens.

thanks all, great info as always!

really helpful to get all your insights. Thanks so much...
