Smarts Mountain, Daniel Doan's (a legendary hero to me) second summit as a 10-year-old was the destination of the day. Great hike and we were the only two people on the mountain. Well-marked trail (sky blue blazes) and steep final stretch made for a nice first spring hike. The cabin on the summit is in great shape and the fire tower gave a fantastic panoramic view of NH and VT. Crystal clear skies and we were treated to a wing-wave by a pilot in a small plane as we waved out the window of the tower. About 4 feet of snow on the upper section. Many moose, bobcat and rabbit tracks and droppings/scat. The solitude was appreciated. Wonderful day.
Winter hiking gear but didn't really need the snowshoes or crampons; a bit of post-holing but nothing to be bothered about.
