trails: boundary dam access road, bushwacks, border swath

conditions: drove in from rt. 3 on east inlet road for about 12.3 miles before turning left at a sign for "boundary pond dam" reaching a parking area complete with new kiosk and privy at 13.1 from the highway. roads were in excellent shape with only short rough stretches. i crossed the outlet of boundary pond and bushwacked up to the border swath through mostly open woods with some thicker undergrowth in places. the swath to snag pond peak was actually a pretty pleasant walk in tracks made by 4x4s along the swath. a few rocky drops and steep inclines that i was quite impressed to see people were managing to get through with a vehicle. numerous hunting shacks and blinds along the canadian side of border as well as a number jeep roads coming up from that side. a bit muddy in places and any wet rock was pretty greasy. there is prefab shed sitting on the summit on the canadian side directly across from the highpoint. i backtracked and followed the swath towards d'urban dropping all the way down to meet the other side of boundary pond in a grassy and swampy section of swath. the initial steep climb up from there does not see jeep traffic and was overgrown and difficult walking. once up the first pitch a jeep road rejoins the swath and the walking is better up to the summit of d'urban. in a couple sections the sentiers frontaliers hiking trail in canada pops in and out of the border swath. on the descent rather than going back down the thick and overgrown section of swath i headed into the woods and bushwacked directly down to the pond. the woods were generally good and i picked up an old road that brought me down near the pond where i got a great view across and up to snag pond peak. wrapping around the pond back to the outlet was a mixed bag of scrappy woods and swampy footing, but dropping to the edge of the pond every so often for the views made it worth it.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: given the forecast i knew this would be a great day to be up on the border so i made the long drive up to take advantage of it. some great hiking along the swath with fantastic views to the surrounding peaks and into canada. temps were nearly perfect with a bit of a breeze at times. felt a lot like fall with a cool bite to the air and a bit of color beginning to show itself on the mountains. awesome hike.
