last couple of years I have gone south to the catskills to avoid the black flies and snow in april and may. This year the winter storms all seem to have been south of me. I went to the finger lakes regoin last friday and was amazed at the snow banks still left. They would not let me in Filmore Glen hiking trails becouse of the snow and ice still on the ground. Are the catskill trails still filled with snow? used to be the farther south you went the less snow.

Seems to be patches of snow (and ice) on peaks 3200' and above. Plenty of snow at the summits of Peekamoose/Table and also Indian Head, twin and Sugarloaf this past weekend.

However, can't predict how soft they will be due to temps, shades. IH, SL, Twin were pretty bad with lots of postholing going on but Table and Peek wasn't bad at all for me. Table, itself is pretty shaded which might explain for the harder snow. But sugarloaf is kind of shaded too but that was pretty bad.

It's questionable whether you should carry snowshoes, you can see some reports in the NY Trail conditions though, including mine from Peek/Table. and HarryK's from the DP hike.

Filmore Glen is a "state park" and is also a gorge. the ice would have made it dangerous so I guess it was a legal issue not wanting to get sued.

Adk dib,
Did Westkill on Saturday from the north side and had 1-2' of snow. The southern and eastern exposures should be almost snow free except for thick balsam areas. I expect the snow to be a non issue this weekend although I may bring snowshoes. I'm doing Slide and will post a report.
Good luck with your Catskill adventures.

I was on graham and balsam lk mts. last sat. and needed snowshoes above 3200'. I'm working in the windham area this week and have been watching the blackheads turn darker as the snow melts. Could be gone by the weekend but i will be bringing shoes unless i hear different.
