Snow Mountain, Cupsuptic, Maine, hiked on 5 6 16
As stated on yesterdays post, thanks to all who submitted previous post for this area, as the information was a great help.
From rt 16 north in Eustis, take left on tim pond road and zero out odometer. At 17.3 miles, go straight through intersection at kennebago river road. Cross bridge. At 17.7 miles, take right on wiggle brook road. At 18.9, bear right. At 20.5, wiggle brook road turns sharp right. Take that right. At 21.0, go left at triangle intersection. At 24.7, take left. Go another .4 and plenty of parking off to the side. All of tim pond road in good condition.
From the parking area, hike up the grassy wet logging road. We did not get our boots wet, just had to pick our way through it. About 1/3 mile in, take a left on another logging road. continue on and straight through the next logging road intersection. The road continues up, will sweep around to the left and you will come to a rectangular log clearing that has been flattened out at about 3000 feet. Go to the far right corner of the clearing and walk straight in for about 50 feet and you will find the start of the herd path heading uphill on the left. This is an area that has been logged with lots of slash but path is visible. We kept going through the slash and then there was an older logging path going uphill with young growth fir coming up. The herd path followed that for a couple hundred yards then popped back into the slash, went a little right, for a short time until finally reaching the end of the cut area at about 3250 feet. A small cairn marks the start of the woods herd path. Aside from the patches of snow and ice, we followed the herd path to the summit pretty well. Some nice views in places but the summit is wooded in. beautiful day. No black flies, but a couple of mosquitoes. Light traction definitely would of helped us. Some Ice probably for the next 2 weeks. Woods were easy going with pretty much all balsam fir. Lots of wildlife today. 4 moose, 12 deer, 1 hare, and a few ruffed grouse on the way to parking area. On the trail, lots of wood frogs with egg masses along the wet grassy logging road. Got up close to a spruce grouse at about 3500 feet, a black backed woodpecker at about 3600 feet. Two species of butterflies on the logging roads and in woods. “Mourning cloaks” and “Question Marks”. Had a great relaxing lunch spot on summit, and enjoyed the sunshine and warm temps.
