After a 7 hour drive, getting up at 1:30, meeting at 4am...I backed out of the Hike...what a wus
Back to bed til 9, packed and headed to Eustis to check start of area to Snow.
In the morning Donna headed to the 50K XC Ski race at Sugarloaf and I to try for Snow Mountain
Parked in small plowed area at North Road and headed in on snowmobiled road at 8:12. Snowmobiles had traveled to within 1/2 mile of the pond. Breaking trail was easy going. Out to the edge of the pond to get a look and followed the edge to start of the 1.2 mile "trail" up the mountain
Trail was easy to follow at first then the ice covered branches started blocking more and more of the trail.
Lost the trail(while on trail had to go under, beside or push through the icy branches) several times and bushwhacked getting caught in one spruce trap for about 5 minutes.
With about 150' to go I wondered if I'd make it...then saw tracks where someone had pushed through. Following I soon arived at the Tower
Couldn't get into the shelter near it as there was to much depth of snow. Changed from the waist up, put on windpants, hat and mittens(wore light gloves coming in).
I was surprised how small the Fire Tower was and there was no "cabin" on it, very much like on Abraham. Ate, drank and took pictures for 19 minutes before heading down. Surprised at how easy it was going down!
Weather was variable from a few flurries to sunny sky's but generally overcast...not to bad
As usual, the walk out wasn't a lot of fun...such it is for a lot of the winter hikes with a bit more distance to travel to get to the "trailhead"
Got to my car at 5:26 and was glad to get my hi heel snowshoes off!
Times were 3:20 to start of trail up mountain, 5:13 to the Summit, 6:28 back to the pond and 9:14 to the car(total times including stops).
This is my last "winter" hike this season leaving me at 90(85 solo) of NEHH Completed
Best hike this winter was with Rejean and Pierre on the Bigelow's(Congratulations on your incredible hikes last weekend!!!)...two great guys and amazing hikers...unlike me, they do like to get an early start
Winter...what a Great Time of the Year it can be...
