FS Rangers come and go. It's like the weather. You don't care for it? Just wait a bit...things will change. It's only woods, and stream crossings, and bugs, and hiking. Life goes on.
I was there two- three years ago and I did not have any trouble at all with the trail (slide to herdpath). I saw several groups (one had like 20 people in it) that day going to Owl's Head and that amount of traffic should keep the treadway clear . There was a cairn or two to mark the way.
I guess if it an unmaintained trail it should either be removed from the maps or left on the map with a special rider stating that it is an unoffical trail and not maintained. But who put the wooden sign on the "true" summit?
Anyway- this is a wilderness area and not particularly close to any trailhead parking lot. As such I don't think we should quarantee everyone will be able to make the summit to every peak. Oh, wtf, let's just pave all the trails to the top- it is federal land isn't it, and should be accessible to all, even the handicapped- right. Maybe I'll just stay home and cruise the internet.
I agree that a new trail should be made that avoids so many of the stream crossings. Trails are being hiked in all seasons and so that are being eroded more severly. A new well engineered trail with proper water bars would be safer and cause less ecological damage in all seasons. Now that HikerEd has determined that we haven't been going to the true summit is a good time to find a new way up but not by making more hurd paths.
