South Baldhead & Dixville - 9/23/12

Trail: Cohos Trail, south to north, from Nash Stream area gate on East Side, north to Dixville Notch; about 15.5 - 16 miles

Conditions: Well blazed and marked route, but WET, WET, WET and muddy footing along a good portion of it's route. New re-route section of the Cohos around Dixville Peak was steep and slippery.

Parking: Our group set up an early morning shuttle, leaving a car at Dixville Notch and driving one car up into Nash Stream (about 1 hour). We drove up East Side road to the last camp where there is a gate. (It was open a few years ago during hunting season on a prior trip, but it was closed for our trip.)

Comment 1: Dixville marked the "finish peak" for the NH Hundred Highest for friends Mike LaRoss and Francis Muzzey! Francis is section hiking the Cohos Trail, so we combined goals to make one long, but rewarding fall hike. Congrats to Mike and Francis!

Comment 2: I hiked the Cohos and Dixville a number of years back... and was really taken aback to see the "moon-like rock crater" that now exists, for the wind tower on the summit.
