trails: stratton brook pond road, firewardens trail, horns pond trail, appalachian trail
conditions: enough parking for a few cars on stratton brook pond road where it is blocked by a large snow bank. road was snowmobile packed. this continued to the pond. a well broken, soft snowshoe track on firewardens to horns pond junction. horns pond was unbroken and didn't appear to be getting much traffic this winter. though generally well blazed we had to look around in a few spots to find the corridor especially in the upper half of the trail. we were generally sinking in anywhere from 6-12 inches into semi consolidated powder snow. some deeper sections up high. once on the ridge the appalachian trail was tracked out to the summit and beyond towards west peak. crossing of the pond outlet was tenuously snowbridged. the other significantly size crossing on horns pond trail was well snowbridged.
equipment: we wore snowshoes the whole hike.
comments: a nice day to take in the views from south horn. a mix of overcast and sun, but with good looks to the surrounding peaks. lots of snow at elevation. some of the nicer snow i have seen in a while and it made for a soft descent. thanks to tom for a great hike.
