date of hike: 1/7/07
conditions: well packed trail on 19 mile with no ice. with the warm conditions carter dome trail to zeta pass was soft even though it was well packed. in got softer the higher the elevation (and felt warmer). some sort of temperature inversion maybe?.....carter moriah from zeta pass to south carter in nice shape (thanks to bob and crew the day before), but also a bit soggy. south to middle carter was a slog. it looked as though one person had been through since the last significant snow. the snow was soft and wet. i travelled it out and back and did what i could to pack it out.
equipment: brought usual winter stuff, but was so warm a single layer polypro with a vest higher up sufficed. snowshoes for sure as soft as everything was and it would no fun to not have them on the ridge between the summits.
comments: socked in most of the day with occasional views of other peaks and the wild river valley. the warmth was the enemy in trail conditions and sweat mangement. should be even worse tomorrow. always nice to get out.
