trails: beaver brook loop x-c trail, gale river road, gale river trail, garfield ridge trail, twinway, frost trail
conditions: beaver brook x-c trail was clear and a bit soggy in spots, but little real mud or standing water. gale river road is clear and mostly dry. no snow or ice beyond a small patch or two until past the trail relocation at which point the coverage begins. some long stretches of standing water and mud below the relocation. once into the snow it was thin with a fair bit of ice to start and then mostly monorail to the ridge with sections that were undermined. garfield ridge trail had pretty stable monorail snow as did the twinway except for a few icy spots and bare rock. some pretty substantial snow depth remains above 3500 feet or so. the frost trail had pretty full snow coverage with bare rock and ice on the steep spots. with todays cooler temps the snow was generally quite solid. water crossings on the gale river trail were pretty standard rock hops stepping in a bit of water.
equipment: i barebooted it from the car until through the new section of trail then used microspikes until within roughly 3/4 mile from the ridge then went with snowshoes to the summits.
comments: a real nice day to be in the mountains. cooler temps than earlier this week made for much more comfortable walking. clear views with high clouds and filtered sun and little to no wind up on south twin. great to be out.
