Heard from southbound ATers that road access to Carlo Col and Speck Pond trails in the Mahoosucs has been impacted by logging operations. And confirmation, details?
Many thanks,
Teej
We hiked the area recently, around late September/early October.
The entire area has been significantly impacted. The road is much the same, although they've ditched deeply on both sides, making it unsightly. The Carlo Col/Gooseye trail still has parking available - perhaps a bit more now that heavy equipment has been there. I can't speak for Speck trailhead... didn't make it up that far.
Sadly, the woods are a mess. At Carlo/Gooseye, the area to the north of the trail has been raped up to the point where the old logging roads intersect the trail. Fortunately, the rest of the trail is intact and as it was a few years ago.
When you get to the top of ridge, though, you can see the effects of the harvesting. It's just not pretty, and the devastation is widespread.
