The road up to the summer parking is blocked by a downed tree just above the last house. This tree was obviously placed there by the forest service so park down by the highway. The snow starts at the level of the upper parking. There are numerous bare and muddy spots that will grow larger as the days go by. The bare spots are gone by 2700' and the snow gets quite deep. The snow between Star King and Waumbek is very deep. The summit sign on Waumbek is at the level of your feet.

I used Stableicers up to Star King in the morning. Used snowshoes after that. Don't even think about trying to get to Waumbek from Star King without snowshoes. I postholed numerous times on that stretch with the snowshoes. I came back down from Star King about 12:30 pm and postholed numerous times with the snowshoes. I fell on my face quite a few times when my leg went in up to my hip.

The trip over to Waumbek had the feel of a bushwhack with a trail that at times was clear and at times fanned out among the trees. And as with a bushwhack the trail became very clear as I approached the summit.

The snow is very deep up on the ridge and as the weather gets warmer and the snow softer this trail will become almost impassable even with snowshoes.

On the way home I stopped in Conway and picked up a copy of the Conway Mountain Ear. Discovered that Steve Smith had put a nice picture of Lauky in the paper. :)
