The Starr King Trail tends to get a lot traffic on weekends and usually gets a fair share of under equipped folks, thus barebooters tend to trash the trail frequently. I did a "hangover hike" (very late start) when the weather cleared off and thus got to encounter many folks on the trail. Despite there being one large meetup group and many individual groups, the only barebooters I saw were a few canine violators;). Given the rain later Saturday afternoon and the drop in temps Saturday night into Sunday I would expect the trail is a sidewalk now.

With regards to parking, the summer trail head is not plowed out but the winter lot is in good but icy state. My normal caveat applies that exiting the winter lot can be difficult for those with traction issues as it tends to ice up. I usually park down the road a short distance at the parking area across the street from the church.

So, if I decide to bare boot it up there on Friday, would that be good or bad?
Actually my friend and I are getting out somewhere on Friday. I have snowshoes but he doesn't. So we will probably be going up something with just microspikes. I hate the thought of ruining a trail.
Any suggestions on where to go for a packed down trail?
Thanks
MZ

No issue with barebooting if the trail is packed down. Generally read he trail reports and you will get a good indication of what trails are packed down where spiels are adequate. Two nights of 18 below zero his going t firm up the trails. If in doubt Tuckermans Ravine trail rarely if ever requires snowshoes.
