Snow on the Starr King trail was somewhat firm in the morning, less so in the afternoon after a day of bright sun and warm temps. Snowshoes would probably be helpful; two of us barebooted up, one wore Microspikes. On the walk over from the Starr King summit to Waumbek, snowshoes are needed. It seemed that just about everyone had worn snowshoes on that part of the trip, since I only saw one or two postholes. On the way down from Starr King I wore snowshoes most of the way. Still possible to bareboot but you'd have to stay right in the middle of the trail.
