Lots of mud and mosquitos especially at the start of the Starr King trail, and in the ridge trail walk to Waumbek. Some drainage on the trail itself in spots. Otherwise very doable. Tree growth at the summit of Starr King has almost totally obscured views from the ledge where the old shelter's fireplace remains - so don't think you'll even get much of a view from that peak.

For us, a good warm-up hike for the twin 14-years olds who are autistic but whose energy levels require a good workout as often as possible. The typically developing family gymnast, age 16, also came along to keep pace with the more capable of her brothers. The other guy, who'd spend his life in front of a video game if I'd let him, is tentative with motor planning especially downhill, but his caution keeps him safe. Wave to us next time you see our curious crew - we accomplish miracles on every path. And forward my email to others you know with special needs kids who may want companions or encouragement. With careful planning and preparation, hiking is the perfect sport for many kids with challenges.
