I took a quick snowshoe over in Milan NH on Sunday in West Milan east of Mt Cabot. I was quite surprised by the snow depth. Unlike Gorham that has some rain last week to set up crust, Milan was 16 to 24" of unconsolidated snow. With my MSRs I was routinely sinking 10 inches and if I stepped too hard 16 inches could occur rapidly and in some spots climbing up steep sections I was 2 to 3 foot deep. I definitely wished I had brought my larger snowshoes. I saw no moose or deer tracks in the woods so I expect even they are still yarded up due to snow depth. At least the sun was out, out of the wind it was warm. Barring a major extended stretch of warm weather, it looks like the trails are going to take awhile to melt out and runoff will be an issue this year unless it happens slow.

A friend of mine in West Milan talked about getting 30" of snow in a week with more forecast. He also calculated the number of cubic feet of snow on his property - in the millions. I once saw a rainfall map of NH that shows Gorham in sort of a rain shadow getting less than other places.

I skied this weekend in the Bethel Maine area and in the woods there is easily 3-4 feet of snow and this was at elevations below 3,000 feet.

I did a recon to LL in Franconia Notch and there is still several feet of snow off trail.

LOTS of snow down south, too. I hit Mt Roberts in Moultonborough on Sunday. Encountered a foot of powder with drifts of 2-3 feet. I was expecting to use spikes, and was stunned that I needed shoes from start-to-end. This has been a fantastic winter!
