Sue,

thanks for posting this most excellent article. When hiking Stratton via the AT in 2008, my hiking partner and I ran into a cow and calf moose right on the trail, who appeared to be quite tame. We decided to inquire with the caretakers about these friendly moose. Hugh and Jeanne invited us into the cabin and we all had a delightful discussion for about a half hour. The conversation focused on their many experiences up there over the years, as well as the friendly Stratton moose, who had become quite accustomed to hikers.

Regards,
Marty

Hugh and Jeanne are pretty much my favorite people in Vermont. During the summer of 2009, I was leading a trail crew for VYCC between Stratton Pond and Stratton Mountain, and Hugh & Jeanne were like parents for the whole crew. We all piled into their cabin up top on so many occasions just to listen to their stories and Hugh's lectures on physics and Bicknell's Thrush. One of my most cherished memories ever came from that 4th of July, watching the sunset with them on the fire tower, watching at least 12 different towns' fireworks displays, from Albany all the way to Hanover. Magical doesn't even begin to describe it.

Thanks for linking to the article. Those two are just amazing.

Met them on my LT thru in Oct.'10. It had snowed 8-10 inches a day prior to our Stratton ascent. Memorable day walking through the snow in shorts! They took us in to their warm, cozy cabin, shared some food and stories. Great couple. Jeanne took this shot of us with the tower, which was closed dues to renovation. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Hb3S8OiRIjQ/UIiOma-Pv3I/AAAAAAAARRI/CNS1ffEe4WY/s640/PA170503.JPG

You were up there the weekend after my first time up Stratton, Saturday 10/9/10, Columbus Day weekend. Jeanne was very kind and looked after me. Beautiful place, lovely people.
