I need a new camera before May. As the sd800 is my top choice now, I'm wondering what it's successor is and if it's worth getting that vs the last 800 off the presses, thanks

also, is that fatal error associated with the lense worth worrying about ?

The sd870 IS is the successor. Many of us prefer the 800 because it includes an optical viewfinder, the 870 drops it. (The 800 and 870 are the only Canon P&Ses that go down to an eFL of 28mm.)

What fatal error? I've never had any problems with my sd800.

There was/is an issue with Canon cameras throwing an E18 error. This just means that the lens can't extend or retract correctly. Canon lumped all problems like that under a single error message and people on the net got the impression that there was an underlying flaw. All cameras with extending lenses can have this problem. Canon is very popular and lumped them all under the same error message so people leaped to the wrong conclusion. IMO, it's a non-issue, Canons are no better or worse then any other camera in this regard.

Unless you are talking about something else, in which case just ignore that.

As Doug said, the SD870 is the successor and I bought the SD800 as soon as I saw that the next version dropped the optical view finder.

that's the one.

Thanks for the input Doug Paul and Dave. It's a bit of a dance right now on the price; I may get it a bit cheaper or I may miss the opportunity to buy it at all. Should probably quit wasting your and my time and just buy it.

OK--thanks.

Any mechanical system can fail or jam, particularly if too much dirt gets inside.
